Why do we celebrate Mother’s Day?
It is a day when we can celebrate our mothers and say Thank you.
Mothers are indispensable, and they love and care for us forever. Once a year, countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day. A day of commemorating women and celebrate mothers and women. All traditions share characteristics and honour mothers and women. The day is a reminder of what mothers do for us.
We can and should spoil our mothers any day throughout the year, but Mother’s day gives us a good reason to spoil our mothers.
History of Mother’s Day
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood trace back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of Rhea and Cybele’s mother goddesses.

Phone calls spike on Mother’s Day compared to any other day of the year. A happy holiday chat with your mom.
Ann Reeves Jarvis
The origins of Mother’s Day date back to the 19th century.
Anna Jarvis
The official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s due to Anna Jarvis’s efforts. Following her Mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived Mother’s Day to honour the sacrifices mothers made for their children. Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring the Mother of the family and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
The modern Mother’s Day began in the United States at the initiative of Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century. In some countries, Mother’s Day is part of older traditions. The Western version of Mother’s Day is commercialized, seeing spikes in flower and gifts sales.
Founder Jarvis herself regretted this commercialism and expressed that this was never her intention.
You can find an alternative to a Mother’s Day celebration in Ethiopia. Families gather each fall to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, a multi-day celebration honouring motherhood. In the Western world, we celebrate Mother’s Day by presenting mothers and other women with gifts and flowers.
It has become one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending. Families also celebrate by giving mothers a day off from activities like cooking or other household chores.
