The origins of Mother’s Day date back to the 19th century.
The official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s due to Anna Jarvis’s efforts. Following her Mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived Mother’s Day to honour the sacrifices mothers made for their children.
Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring the Mother of the family and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
The modern Mother’s Day began in the United States at the initiative of Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century. In some countries, Mother’s Day is part of older traditions.
The Western version of Mother’s Day is commercialized, seeing spikes in flower and gifts sales.
Founder Jarvis herself regretted this commercialism and expressed that this was never her intention.
