More about the North Star

At The North Star, we strive to be the guiding light in intimate, luxury hospitality.  Our small scale allows us to focus on the comfort and experience of each guest – ensuring that every visit is memorable and unique.

Why the North Star?

When searching for a name we took inspiration from the antique ship lights displayed in the hotel – we aimed to be that same welcoming light, guiding weary travellers from across the globe to a peaceful harbour.

What better than the North Star – that constant guide to sailors and travellers across the ages? The North Star, also known as Polaris, has been one of the most important celestial navigation tools throughout history due to its nearly fixed position in the sky, almost directly above Earth’s North Pole.

At the North Star Hotel we aim to be just as constant – always providing the very best in hospitality and comfort to all our guests.

A Whale of a time

Our whale skull is an unique piece of decor on the North Star lawn. The skull washed up on the beach in front of the North Star on 12 Jan 2024. It took 13 men and A LOT of blood, sweat and tears to drag the skull the 800m to its new home on our lawn – where it serves as an art installation/conversation starter!

This piece was identified as the back end of a baleen whale skull – possibly a Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). Adults range in length from 14–17m (46–56 ft) and weigh up to 40 metric tons (44 short tons).

Humpback Whales are some of the most common whale species spotted in our area. They migrate from Antarctica along the east coast of South Africa to the warmer waters of Mozambique and Madagascar to breed and give birth.

Humpback whales migrate an average of about 5,000 kilometres, one of the longest migratory journeys of any mammal.

Our friendly staff is always ready to assist you – never hesitate to let us know if there is any way in which we can make your stay with us more comfortable.
